Nasir Jamshed guided Pakistan to a six-wicket win over arch-rivals India in the first one-day international at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai on Sunday.
The tourists overhauled the 228-run target with 11 balls to spare. Opener Jamshed slammed 101 not out. It was his second hundred against India.
The victory was built on a 112-run stand with former skipper Younis Khan (58 off 60 balls) after the side lost two wickets for 21 runs in the first 10 overs.
Pakistan lost their first wicket off the first ball when debutant pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar induced
in-form Mohammad Hafeez (0) to shoulder arms to a delivery.
Kumar struck for the second time dismissing Azhar Ali for nine.
Jamshed and Younis then got Pakistan back on track before Ashok Dinda removed the latter, who was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin at midwicket.
Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq was bowled by Ishant Sharma after scoring 16.
Jamshed was then joined by Shoaib Malik (34 not out) and the pair steered their team towards victory adding 56 runs. Malik survived a chance when R Ashwin bowled a no-ball.
The next match is on Jan 3 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Earlier, Indian captain MS Dhoni's superb unbeaten century helped the home side recover from a top-order collapse to post a fighting 227-6 in 50 overs.
Pacer Junaid Khan utilised the damp conditions with a four-wicket haul to leave the Indian top order in utter disarray on 29-5 inside 10 overs after Misbah-ul-Haq opted to bowl first. But Dhoni, who was dropped on 16, went on to hit 113 off 125 balls to single-handedly resurrect the team.
Dhoni, who also completed 7,000 ODI runs during the course of his innings, received fine support from Suresh Raina (43) and R Ashwin (31 not out).
Dhoni and Ashwin shared the best-ever seventh-wicket partnership for India, adding 125 runs.
India's first ODI without the now retired Sachin Tendulkar got off to terrible start with struggling opener Virender Sehwag becoming Junaid's first victim.
The right-hander after slogging for 11 balls to get four runs failed to pick a Junaid inswinger, which crashed into his middle and off stump.
His dismissal started a procession of wickets.
Gautam Gambhir (8), Virat Kohli (0) and Yuvraj Singh (2) came and went as Junaid worked his magic, getting ample support from Mohammed Irfan and pace spearhead Umar Gul.
The big four of the Indian batting order were all bowled, three of them by Junaid.
Rohit Sharma became Junaid's fourth victim after scratching around for 14 deliveries for his four runs.
India were staring firmly down the barrel before Raina and Dhoni came together to repair the innings slowly and steadily.
The cautious duo added 73 runs for the sixth wicket.
Dhoni got a life on 16 when Misbah-ul-Haq dropped him at midwicket off Mohammad Hafeez's bowling and the Indian, who smashed seven fours and three sixes, made it count.
By the end Dhoni was suffering from dehydration and cramps.
Raina's patient innings came to an end when he lost his leg stump to Hafeez.
Dhoni brought up his eighth ODI hundred in style, hoicking Irfan over cover in the 49th over, which produced 21 runs.
Junaid was the most successful Pakistan bowler with 4-43 in his nine overs.
Both sides shared the two-match T20 series that preceded the ODIs.
