Bangladesh made great strides towards forcing a
result in the first Test as West Indies finished on 244 for six, a lead
of 215 on the fourth day on Friday.
Earlier, Bangladesh passed the 500 runs in a Test for the first time after they posted 556 all out, their highest score in the five-day version. The Tigers' previous highest team total was 488 against Zimbabwe in 2005.
Kieran Powell scored back-to-back centuries -110 and Darren Bravo added 76. But the hosts through
Shohag Gazi, Shakib Al Hasan and Rubel Hossain claimed two wickets each to pin the tourists back in a dramatic last session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Bangladesh started the day on 455-6 but eventually finished with a 29-run lead.
Nasir Hossain was denied a maiden Test century when he was out for 96.
He added 121 runs for the seventh wicket with Mahmudullah before Sunil Narine ended the latter's resistance for 62.
Gazi struck the first ball he faced for four but Narine had him bowled in the same over.
Shahadat Hossain, who hung around as Nasir edged closer to the three-figure mark, could only watch as Nasir was undone by a soft dismissal when he caught in the slips off Tino Best.
During his 136-ball stay, Nasir struck six fours and four sixes
Shahadat was the last wicket to fall for 13.
