A maiden century for Naeem Islam (108) and
half-century by Shakib Al Hasan (89) enabled Bangladesh to avoid the
follow-on as they finished the third day of the first Test against West
Indies on 455 for six on Thursday.
By the close, Mahmudullah and Nasir Hossain were batting on 42 and 33 respectively as they trailed the visitors by 72 runs.
In an eventful day's play, the Tigers through Naeem and Shakib continued to take on the Caribbean attack after they resumed on 164-3 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The hosts scored 88 runs in 29 overs before lunch. Shakib was the aggressor of the two but he had a tough time negotiating Ravi Rampaul. Naeem, though slow, played a chanceless innings.
But the record 167-run fourth-wicket stand ended shortly after lunch when Shakib gave a straight forward catch to substitute fielder AB Fudadin off Ravi Rampaul for 89.
Naeem reached the milestone by guiding a Tino Best delivery down towards fine leg for a four.
After the record stand with Shakib, Naeem was joined by captain Mushfiqur Rahim and together they added another 76 runs before he went after a short of length delivery from Darren Sammy and edged the ball to keeper Denesh Ramdin.
Naeem's marathon knock lasted 255 balls and contained 17 fours.
Mushfiqur got out six runs later for 43 to become left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul's first Test wicket.
The Bangladesh captain came down the wicket but hit a powerful drive upplishly straight back to the bowler to make the score 368 for six.
Mahmudullah and Nasir, however, rode their luck at times before settling down to add 87 runs ensuring that the home side inched ever closer to West Indies' first innings total of 527-4 declared.
