Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has questioned
the International Cricket Council's decision to tweak ODI cricket's
rules, reports Cricket365.
The game's governing body recently restricted the maximum number of fielders allowed in the outfield to two in the first Powerplay, three in the second and four across the rest of the innings.
While Sri Lanka slow bowlers Jeevan Mendis and Rangana Herath and their New Zealand counterparts Nathan McCullum and Rob Nicol didn't prove particularly expensive in Sunday's second ODI, Jayawardene empathised with the spinners.
"I'm not very comfortable with all these changes and I don't think it's the right way to go forward. Unless there is sufficient assistance to the spin bowlers on the wicket, I feel the spinners will get targeted," said Jayawardene.
"They will try to bowl on one side of the wicket and become one dimensional, whereas the art of spin is about turning the ball and getting batsmen out.
"A spinner needs the cover, and you're not getting that with the new rules. As a batsman, it's easy for me, but as a captain, I feel for the bowlers."
