Despite a brilliant unbeaten half-century by Eoin
Morgan, it could not prevent England from losing by 15 runs to West
Indies in their ICC World Twenty20 Super Eight match in Pallekele on
Thursday.
England scored 164-5 in response to West Indies' 179 for five, with Morgan hitting a blistering 71 off 36 balls.
The left-hander featured in an enterprising fourth-wicket stand of 107 with Alex Hales, who made 68.
But the damage done by Ravi Rampaul's opening over, which saw England lose two wickets without a run on the board and sluggish scoring in the first six poweplay overs, ultimately left Morgan and Hales too much to do.
Rampaul struck on the second and third balls of England's first over to dismiss Craig Kieswetter and Luke Wright respectively.
Kieswetter played a terrible shot off a short of length ball to hit a simple one to the fielder at point, Wright on the other hand, nicked an outside off ball straight to Chris Gayle in the slips.
England then recovered with Hales and Jonny Bairstow adding 55 runs for the third wicket. But Gayle struck in his first over to break the stand, having Bairstow caught for 18.
Kieron Pollard took a cracker of a catch while racing from long-on to send Bairstow packing.
Earlier, Gayle and Johnson Charles gave West Indies a rocking start as they put up a splendid 103-run partnership after skipper Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat.
Gayle smashed a brilliant half century with six 4s and four 6s; however, English spinner Swann got the better of the Calypso king when a lazy slog led to the left-hander being caught by Steven Finn.
Jade Dernbach scalped Charles (84) after his sweltering innings to give England some respite.
