Ajantha Mendis T20 improved his own record by taking six wickets for just eight runs as Sri Lanka strikes minnows Zimbabwe by 82 runs in the opening match of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament, here on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka overcame a slow start to post a huge 182 for four and then was included Zimbabwe for 100 in 17.3 overs in the Group C match at the Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium.
Difficulties managing Zimbabweans around and were deceived by Ajantha (6/8) and Jeevan Mendis (3/24), who shared nine wickets between them.
Ajantha figures were better in Twenty20 cricket as he improved on his own initial figures of six for 16 which he had claimed against Australia last year.
The hosts have an impressive total of Kumar Sangakkara (44) and Jeevan as the two left-handers put on a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Sri Lanka were 107 for three in 14 overs but Sangakkara and Jeevan took the first leg of the minnows with his hitting home. Zimbabwe had done well in the first part of the inputs Lanka but leaked 75 runs in the last six overs to let go of the advantage.
The total proved too big to manage Zimbabwe against an experienced bowling line-up.
Ajantha was too hot to handle and conceded only eight runs in his four overs and two of them single.
Zimbabweans could manage only five boundaries in the first 10 overs, three of them from Hamilton Maskadaza bat (20), who was the top scorer for them.
Ajantha scored twice in two balls in the sixth over that first hit the stumps Vusi Sibanda (11) and then captain Brendan Taylor was stumped in the next ball.
Maskadaza had batted with confidence and Lasith Malinga dangerous even sent twice to the border but not pick Ajantha and became his third victim.
Jeevan after contributing with the bat, scoring two more goals in his first as Craig Ervine scalped (10) and Malcolm Waller, who went without troubling the scorer.
At 58 for five in 11 overs, Zimbabwe chase was in disarray and it was a matter of time the completed Lanka resounding victory.
Ajantha added the scalp of Elton Chigumbura (19), Prosper Utseya (1) and Kyle Jarvis (0) in your account before Lasith Malinga brought curtains at entrances rivals.
Previously, three of the four wickets that fell in the entries were made Lanka spinner Graeme Cremer as outputs (1/27) was the lone bowler for Zimbabwe to make an impression.
Poor fielding also added to the woes of Zimbabweans. They gave away 20 extras, including seven wides.
Sangakkara went racing 44 of 26 balls with two fours and six in a while Mendis took 30 balls for his call and served with five boundaries, including a six.
Zimbabwe pacers Kyle Jarvis and Brian Vitori side had provided a good start, not letting Lanka openers score freely and also created opportunities and a half.
Tillakaratne Dilshan (39), who likes to write on the side of the outside, he was not given a lot of deliveries in your favorite area.
But somehow Zimbabweans could not capitalize on that. They shot six wides in the first five surplus, which meant he had filmed an added extra, apart from giving extra six runs for rivals.
Added to that, not even simple catches taken as offered debutant Chris Mpofu Dilshan Munaweera before. Malcolm Waller not hold on to a low catch.
The two Dilshans then recited three boundaries in that over, taking 15 runs. Tickets Munaweera ended in an exhausted when he lost his bat while attempting a single and could not return to the crease in time.
Cremer began to annoy the right Lanka from the beginning and had even caught Mahela Jayawardene (13), but the ball was called a no-ball for breach of lateral fold.
However, the roulette achieved by having it Dilshan remove trapped behind after two balls. Sri Lanka lost by a run out in a mix pattern with Kumar Sangakkara.
Lanka reached 100 in the 14th over when Mendis dragged Cremer delivery to leg side boundary. Mendis pushed the button throttle, reaching a six and a four Chugumbura Elton. Sangakkara Mendis and keep moving the marker although not scored many boundaries.
Two of the three sixes in innings Lanka occurred in the recent past - one was beaten just before getting Sangakkara run out by Thisara Perera.
